The "Etsy Guru" Trap: Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying.

Title: The "Etsy Guru" Trap: Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying

You want to make passive income by selling AI art, and you’ve searched for "how to sell on Etsy." You then find yourself on YouTube and your algorithm is flooded with them: the experts promising one million pound revenue for starting out with just a few dollars or pounds and a ChatGPT account to get you started on your AI art.

The reality is that there is nothing wrong with using AI art, but you do need some skill sets such as Photoshop; the "slap up and go" business model is just not going to work.

The reality is that these Etsy sellers are over; they cannot make money from Etsy, so now they turn to inexperienced folk and grab onto them with the claim that they have cracked the code. They whisper about "passive income" and "secrets" the top 1% of sellers don't want you to know. And for the low, low price of $497 (valued at $5,000!), they will hand you all of their secrets.

Before you pull out your credit card, let’s talk about what’s really going on.

The "Passive Income" Myth The biggest hook these gurus use is the dream of passive income. They sell the idea that you can upload a few digital planners or Print-on-Demand t-shirts, go to sleep, and wake up to the "cha-ching" notification on your phone.

The Reality: Etsy is active work. As I mentioned, there is nothing wrong with using AI art, but you do need some skill sets, such as Photoshop. Digital product shops require constant customer service, SEO updating, trend research, and marketing. When a guru sells you "easy," they are selling you a lie. And with Etsy constantly changing how its search engine works, keeping up with what can and cannot be sold on its website is a constant headache.

The "Secret Algorithm" Strategy. As mentioned, Etsy’s algorithm is constantly changing. What worked in 2023 might get your shop banned in 2025. The only people who truly know how the algorithm works are the engineers at Etsy. Good photos, clear titles, and products people actually want are the keys. I am not telling you how to sell on Etsy, but that is a good place to start.

The "I Don't Even Sell Anymore" Red Flag: Do a little digging on your favourite guru. Do they still have an active Etsy shop? Or do they make the vast majority of their money selling courses about selling on Etsy? The marketplace evolves fast. If a guru hasn't sold a physical item since 2019, their advice is outdated. Many of these influencers realised that selling the dream of a business is far more profitable (and less work) than running the business itself.

For example, a top-selling digital tumbler shop of 2023 told everybody to make tumbler wraps with AI. This flooded the digital tumbler market, and now that shop makes nothing in sales anymore (I can see it in eRank). They most likely got sales that looked good on paper by using a really high ad budget on Etsy to sell you the dangling carrot of having your own shop like that.

I would always recommend your own website and being an independent seller rather than an Etsy seller, but the Etsy Seller Handbook is a good place to start. At the end of the day, it takes talent to become a top seller. If someone promises you overnight success, six figures in six months, or "secrets" that require a credit card to unlock—run.

Your business deserves better than a get-rich-quick scheme. It deserves the real work that leads to real results.
